Empty Eyes

By Victoria McNally

Blindness,

Using my eyes to see,

Moulding my hands to shape your world

Unable to share your vision.

Danger does not exist in your life,

Stress does not control this precious gem,

Skin so perfect, almost baby-like

But sometimes I see a sadness in your smile

Being able to do so much,

But still depending on others,

You can pretend,

And you can do a lot of pretending.

You cannot see the sky but does it matter.

Treats can never be hidden,

That nose can find it all,

Gulping down cups of tea,

One slice of cake may never be enough.

Canes just slow you down,

You prefer to walk unaided,

Catching up is a task for others,

Obstacle courses feed your gentle mind.

Alone with your thoughts,

I watch you underneath the dancing tree,

Giving out as if I wasn't there

Confusion leads you to frustration.

The trust we have is built with time,

Challenges become rewards,

Recognition and a sense of hope,

Makes us both delighted to walk together.
